Prior to the procedure
• Contact the Surgery Center re. specific instructions,
direction and payment (if applicable, typically our practice will
reimburse the facility and anesthesia service directly and you
should not be expected to pay additionally)
• Sign the enclosed consent form for vasovasostomy
• Avoid Aspirin or Motrin-like product for one week, you
may take Tylenol or Vioxx/Celebrex for pain up to surgery
• Contact the IVF/Andrology Lab if concurrent sperm extraction
& banking is desired. There will be no additional surgical
charge for this procedure; related cost will be generated and
payable directly to the Lab (about $750).
The Day before and the morning of the
procedure
• Familiarize the location of the Surgery Center and allow
enough time for the traffic on I-285 especially if your case is
in the mid to late morning.
• Shower the night before and the morning of the procedure
and GENTLY clean the genital area with soap, no scrubbing to avoid
abrasion or roughing of the skin.
• Do Not shave the genital area, we will do so right before
the procedure
• Nothing by mouth for at least 8 hours before the procedure;
you may take your routine medication with a sip of water.
After the procedure
• Apply ice pack for 8 hours
• Long acting local anesthetic will be applied at the end
of the procedure to alleviate the immediate pain for 3 to 4 hour,
do not be alarmed if you begin to notice more pain a few hours
later as the local anesthetic wears off
• Take two Ultracet twice per day for 3 to 5 days, this
is non-narcotic and works well to lower the overall pain and minimize
the need for narcotics. Take the narcotic pain medications on
an as needed basis to supplement Ultracet (or Motrin, Alleve if
you so choose instead).
• You may shower in 24 hours, no bath for 7 days
• You may apply antibiotic ointment on the incision three
times a day, typically this is not needed; sutures are dissolvable
and will fall off in 7 to 10 days
• Intravenous antibiotic will be given at the time of the
procedure and will not be needed post-op
• Off your feet and take it easy for 3-5 days following
VV, 5-7 days following EV; wear a scrotal support for 2 weeks
• No heavy exercise or running for 3 weeks, you may walk
and do weight training in 2 weeks
• No intercourse or biking for 6 weeks
Follow up appointment
• Please call the office for an appointment in 2 to 3 weeks
unless you live afar
• The first semen analysis will be at 3-month post op, which
we perform in the office to check for patency; formal analysis
will be obtained at 6 month.
